Wengay Newton will ask City Council to hold special election for new St. Pete Pier

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council member Wengay Newton has long been a proponent of saving the city’s iconic inverted pyramid. He was a vocal critic of the Lens and supported former mayoral candidate Kathleen Ford’s petition effort to save the current Pier as well as the successful petition drive by Concerned Citizens that led to the ultimate undoing of the Lens. Now he’s supporting the only design out of the Pier Selection Committee’s top three picks that reuses and renovates the…

Contrary to Times editorial, Steve Kornell shouldn’t be ousted

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times published an editorial Wednesday calling for the heads of five City Council members who voted against Mayor Rick Kriseman’s original deal brokered with the Tampa Bay Rays to allow them to look outside of St. Pete for potential stadium sites. The editorial, to put it mildly, was brutal. The Times’ editorial board called Wengay Newton and Bill Dudley lacking in leadership. It said Amy Foster ran for her seat based on business acumen, but has yet to show…

Wengay Newton launches radio show

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

If you just can’t get enough of Wengay Newton’s rambling soliloquies by watching on the city’s public access television channel, rest easy.  The City Council’s lone African-American voice now has another microphone at his disposal — a new radio call-in show, “Community News with Newt,” on Praise 1590 AM W.R.X.B. airing every Saturday from 3 to 4 pm. Can’t say it won’t be entertaining. (H/t to the Ybor City Stogie)

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Before I write about the issue du jour, let me just tell you how absolutely proud I am to have written a post mentioning the St. Petersburg Times that ended up in Urban Dictionary.  Yes, the post involved the word “taint” and it’s moments like this that make life worth living. Also, stop the presses, outgoing Times food critic Laura Reiley actually wrote a review that does not end with the awarding of 2.5 stars. In this case, she awarded…

5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

News of Mary Brown’s decision not to seek re-election to the Pinellas County School Board is reverberating through the African American community, which viewed Brown as a hero and a pioneer, no matter how ineffective she was in elected office.  As boring as a race for the School Board may be, the Times will make a project out of those who hope to replace Brown.  That’s the way the newspaper works.  It has impact in the statewide races because it…
