Steve Corsetti, you have my apologies, but I have to endorse you — but first, another rant about Kathleen Ford

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

In case any of you are wondering what political life would be like under a Kathleen Ford administration, this past week offered a glimpse of things to come. The debate over whether to vacate the sidewalk in front of BayWalk has nothing to do with Kathleen Ford. Not in the least. But an already fractious debate became more decisive the moment Ford announced she opposed the plan. Suddenly, lines were drawn and positions hardened. And this was an issue to…

The vote to vacate the BayWalk sidewalk failed, not because of the protesters, but because of the St. Pete Chamber

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Much has already been written about the effort to vacate the sidewalk outside of BayWalk. St. Petersburg Times Editor of Editorials is already blaming the Gang of Four (Leslie Curran, Jeff Danner, Wengay Newton and Herb Polson for BayWalk’s impending demise: “When BayWalk is boarded up and completes its transformation from downtown St. Petersburg’s jewel to its biggest eyesore, we will know whom to blame. When Muvico closes and there is not a single movie theater in a city that…

St. Petersburg Times – They put dagger into BayWalk – When BayWalk is boarded up and completes its transformation from downtown St. Petersburg’s jewel to its biggest eyesore, we will know whom to blame. When Muvico closes and there is not a single movie theater in a city that is supposed to be major league, we will know where to point the finger. And when that blight causes the windows in those shiny new condos to remain dark and other…

10 things I think I think about the (pathetic) St. Petersburg City Council races

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. Jim Kennedy had a really bad week. First, Howard Troxler knocked the entire City Council for its inability to solve even the simplest of issues, such as the controversy surrounding a hot dog vendor. The story would not have been too bad for Kennedy, except for this quote, which is a doozy: “In government,” Kennedy said blithely of this latest delay, “six weeks is pretty darn quick.” Then a relative bombshell hit when Ken Welch came forward and said…

Preview of St. Pete City Council races: Steve Kornell and Angela Rouson square off, Danner lays low and Kennedy could be in trouble

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

On the undercard of this November’s municipal elections are five races for the St. Petersburg City Council that range in intensity from the very exciting to the very boring. Here’s how they break down: District 2: Exciting – Incumbent Jim Kennedy is in trouble. How much trouble? I’m not sure. But, having met his opponent Steve Corsetti, I know Kennedy has a race on his hands. Corsetti is the kind of plain-spoken candidate that, for better or worse, appeals to…

10 things I think I think about why Deveron Gibbons and Scott Wagman lost

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. Both Gibbons and Wagman hired campaign managers who have yet to prove themselves in a significant, competitive race. Gibbons hired Nick Hansen, who’s resume includes efforts for Angelo Cappelli and Mitt Romney, while Toni Molinaro quarterbacked the Pinellas County Democrat’s failed Vote Local campaign. Molinaro also lost her race to retain her precinct in PCDEC. Neither manager’s work history was exactly confidence inspiring. Hansen and Molinaro’s efforts in the Mayoral Campaign weren’t their finest hours, either. Hansen was nowhere…

District 4 candidate Pamella Settlegoode announces plan for summer youth employment

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Nothing like announcing a plan about Summer Jobs on Labor Day weekend. Here’s Pamella Settlegoode’s press release: Pamella Settlegoode, candidate for District 4 City Council, unveiled the first of a series of strategies designed to rebuild and revitalize St. Petersburg. The strategy released today is for a program designed to offer jobs funded by the city to local teenagers during the summer months, allowing them to receive training, skills and experience in government or business when out of school. โ€œIโ€™ve…
