5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

News of Mary Brown’s decision not to seek re-election to the Pinellas County School Board is reverberating through the African-American community, which viewed Brown as a hero and a pioneer, no matter how ineffective she was in elected office.  As boring as a race for the School Board may be, the Times will make a project out of those who hope to replace Brown.  That’s the way the newspaper works.  It has impact in the statewide races because it is…

5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I was ghastly ill over the weekend (why do I always get sick in May?), so today’s edition is a blend of commentary from Sunday and Monday’s editions of the St. Petersburg Times. As always, the best read on Monday comes via Tom Jones and his “Shooting from the lip” column.  A full page of insight into the world of sports that you didn’t already know from watching ESPN. Worst read is, as usual, Ernest Hooper’s banal column. Speaking of…

10 things I think I think about Bill Foster’s first 100 days in office

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

This week will mark the end of Bill Foster’s first 100 days as Mayor of St. Petersburg.  Here’s what I think of Mayor Foster’s first three months in office: 1.  So let me get this straight, Foster’s first three major personnel decisions have been to retain Goliath Davis, to eliminate five Park Ranger positions at Boyd Hill Nature Trail and to hire his former campaign manager for a $50,000 a year position. 2.  Foster is said to have narrowed the list…

10 things I think I think (for the last time) about St. Petersburg’s elections

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. I have to take umbrage with this line from Stephen Nohlgren’s (faulty) analysis of why Kornell won: “For starters, the Kornell camp worried about last-minute smears by Rouson or her supporters, Lapinski said.” Angela Rouson was never going to go negative against Steve Kornell because he was gay, simply because she doesn’t believe being gay is a negative. As for her supporters, of which I was probably her most vocal, we/I were never going to go negative against Steve…

Winners & Losers from yesterday’s election

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Forget about Bill Foster winning and Kathleen Ford losing, there were plenty of other Winners and Losers who emerged from the St. Petersburg Mayoral Election. Here’s a running list of who really won and who really, really lost. Winners The Architects, the Maestros, or whatever they call campaign managers nowadays: Johnny Bardine, Steve Lipinski and Darden Rice. Bardine, Jim Kennedy’s man on the ground, saved a campaign that had been floundering, Lipinski, Steve Kornell’s campaign manager, has put together a…
