WSJ: Could Jim Greer’s arrest hurt Charlie Crist’s Senate campaign?

Former Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer was arrested today for charges stemming from an investigation into how he spent committee funds during his tenure.

While the arrest presents obvious problems for Greer, it could also hurt his former close ally, Gov. Charlie Crist, who left the Republican Party in April to mount an independent bid for the Senate.

During his tenure as party chairman, even up until they day he resigned in February, Crist supported Greer.

“It’s surprising,” Crist said Wednesday at a press conference, according to The Associated Press. “Sometimes you’re disappointed by people.”

AP reported that the prosecutor in the case declined to comment on whether Crist had been interviewed as part of the investigation into Greer. The Florida Republican Party has been cooperating with the investigation. “We look forward to justice being served,” said GOP Chairman John Thrasher in a statement.

The immediate political problem for Crist is the optics. As AP notes, Crist was often traveling with Greer when he stayed in high-end hotels and restaurants. Credit card statements released earlier this month showed $7 million in charges on cards from 30 individuals related to the party during Greer’s three years as chairman while Crist was governor.
