Pinellas GOP welcomes Paula Dockery

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Paula Dockery will speak to the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee on Monday, February 8. (It’s already been a month since Marco Rubio won the straw ballot of the PCREC?!) Also, Chairman JJ Beyrouti, who looked rather snazzy at Judge Thomas Minkoff’s investiture, confirms to me that Congressman Pete Sessions will be the featured speaker at this month’s Lincoln Day Dinner. Congressman Bill Young will deliver the keynote address, during which, it is widely speculated,…

Local fire chief levels verbal complaint against H-48 candidate Tom McKone

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

East Lake’s fire chief leveled a verbal harassment complaint against an East Lake Fire District commissioner this week. He said the harassment occurred during a conversation about how military reserve members in the Fire Department should be paid when they’re on active military duty. “I have just been verbally abused by Chairman Tom McKone via cell phone,” Fire Chief Jeff Malzone wrote in an e-mail to commissioners Tuesday. “I demand that this board take the proper course of action.” For…

City of St. Petersburg’s lobbyist resigns – updated

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The effervescent Laura Boehmer has resigned from her position as the City of St. Petersburg’s full-time lobbyist, less than five weeks after Mayor Bill Foster took office. According to my sources, Ms. Boehmer has agreed to take a position with uber lobbying firm Southern Strategies. “Laura has represented St. Petersburg very well in Tallahassee over the past several years, and we wish her well as she continues her career in legislative affairs with a private firm,” said Senior Administrator Dave…

Exclusive: Poll shows Pinellas Commissioner Susan Latvala in precarious position versus challenger Beverly Billiris

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A recent poll of 300 high frequency voters by Schroth, Eldon & Associates shows 10-year County Commissioner Susan Latvala would face two competitive elections against well-known challengers in an incumbent hostile political environment. In the Republican Primary, Susan Latvala leads Beverly Billiris by only five points – 28% to 23% with Carl Folkman receiving 5% and 44% of respondents undecided. With much of the attention focusing on the anti-Washington mood of the nation and the slipping in the polls of…

Former St. Pete Mayor Rick Baker hosting Meet-and-Greet for Charlie Crist on Saturday

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The invitation that just crossed my desk is interesting for so many reasons. Rick Baker is hosting a coffee reception for Charlie Crist. Sounds pleasant enough, right? Well, keep in mind, St. Pete’s two biggest swinging dicks (metaphorically) have never been especially close. Baker’s more of a Bush man than a Crist ally, so Baker’s support of Crist represents more than just a former mayor hosting a soiree for a city’s favorite son. What will also be interesting is whether…

Deveron Gibbons screws Hizzoner: Rick Baker not a finalist for SPC job

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

From the Jeffrey S. Solochek: St. Petersburg College’s presidential search commitee is beginning the process of naming finalists for the college’s open presidency. Of course, the real story is if former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker will be among the finalists. After a first ballot, Baker is third among eight semifinalists, behind Thomas Keegan and Bill Law. The committee has said it plans to name 3-5 finalists, but could lower the number. Stay tuned. UPDATE – This has turned into…
