Scott Wagman’s new mailpiece downright garish

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Scott Wagman’s campaign is quickly assembling the worst direct-mail portfolio ever seen by a candidate spending half-a-million dollars. There is something positive to be said about pumping out piece after piece of this crap, but it’s hard to be positive when the design is garish and the message so muddled. Yes, I said garish. All sorts of colors and images and fonts, all swirled together with no apparent concern for the person reading it. It’s looks like a crayon box…

St. Petersburg Times’ political editor Adam Smith fails to give credit where credit is due

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Two similar national stories about altered photos of Barack Obama, each with a local connection, have captivated both the traditional media and the blogosphere. The first centered around St. Petersburg’s Dr. David McKalip’s e-mailing of a photoshopped picture of Obama depicted as a witch-doctor, the second was about Florida state Rep. Darryl Rouson’s denouncement of the posting on the Pinellas County Republican Party’s Facebook page of a widely disseminated image of Barack Obama painted in whiteface, supposedly to look like a…

Can Jamie Bennett do anything right?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Another day, another miscue by the floundering Jamie Bennett Campaign. The latest is this invitation to a fundraising event Bennett held at The Independent Bar in downtown St. Petersburg. The problem with this invitation is the disclaimer. Because this was an invitation to a fundraising event, it needs the extended disclaimer as required in Sections 106.025 and 106.143, F.S., i.e., “The purchase of a ticket for, or a contribution to, the campaign fundraiser is a contribution to the campaign of…”…

In a letter to readers dated July 30, publisher Jim Johnson writes: Things have gotten busier for me and posts have become less and less often. This was always meant to be something I did in my spare time, and I have less and less of that these days. So I have come to the decision to officially put the blog on hiatus for an indefinite period of time.”…

Times editorial slams candidates, Deveron Gibbons, in particular, on ‘pandering on panhandling’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

You just knew the Times was setting Deveron Gibbons up on this story. Fortunately for Gibbons, his strong stance against panhandling will resonate with voters, even if it erased whatever hope he had of earning the Times‘ recommendation. Here is an excerpt from the Times editorial: “St. Petersburg’s mayoral race has degenerated into a contest to see who can be more punitive toward panhandlers. Candidates are jockeying to out-tough one another, with Deveron Gibbons telling voters recently he would “guarantee”…

Angela Rouson drops in on PoHo

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

From Wayne Garcia, Political Whore: Angela Rouson stepped into the Creative Loafing recording studio this week to discuss her campaign for St. Petersburg City Council in District 5, against fellow newcomers Steve Kornell and retired police officer Joe Smith. Yes, she’s the wife of powerhouse (and controversial) African American politician Darryl Rouson; but she came off as her own person — bright, articulate, well-informed and passionate — in her recent Suncoast Tiger Bay Club event, and she likewise was engaging…
