Karen Seel, Janet Long stand up for Scott Houghton-Wagman?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I just can’t stand Scott Wagman’s campaign. It’s borderline irrational because I agree with Mr. Houghton-Wagman on most of the issues. I just can’t stomach the sense of noblesse oblige that drips from his campaign. You can see it in this picture taken at one of his fundraisers. Imagine Houghton-Wagman’s brain at work. “If I can just get this picture of Karen Seel and Janet Long standing next to me, that’s almost as good as endorsement. Because someone will follow…

In the name of pride, why are the Stonewall Democrats asking these questions?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Let me begin this post by pre-empting some of the responses I am sure to receive because this article may seem like an attack on the Stonewall Democrats. As a matter of fact, my thinking is anything but negative about the Stonewall D’s, especially after a conversation I had with one of their prominent members, who said he’s gay first, and a Democrat second, because he’s been to too many estate sales in which the loved partner loses everything because…

11th candidate joins SP mayoral race

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Political novice Richard Eldridge became the 11th candidate for Mayor of St. Petersburg. Don’t know much about him, but his frighteningly amateur website can be found at eldridge2009.com. He was in the Marine Corps. Could be a scary dude, so I’m not saying anything else. Except I found it a little odd that on his website, he makes it clear that when he is writing: “there are no gender neutral words for he, she, him, her, his or hers. In my…

As St. Petersburg burns, City Hall fiddles with parking meters

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A certain city council member and mayoral candidate once remarked to me, after I complained about the unevenness of the enforcement of the city’s parking codes, that “those meters pay my salary.” It’s probably obvious which council member said that to me, but it’s unclear who the genius is behind the decision to standardize when meters are policed throughout downtown, from 9 am to 10 pm, seven days a week. In this economic downturn, when downtown concerns, especially restaurants, are…

Why did Democrat Janet Long go to Jack Latvala’s campaign kick-off?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Evidently, more than 250 people stopped by Jack Latvala’s campaign kick-off at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Certainly, many of those who attended did so out of fear, rather than enthusiasm for Jack’s campaign. Maybe that explains why Democrat Janet Long was one of those who went to wish Jack well in his effort to put a Democratic seat back in the GOP’s column. Janet has been as effective a state representative can be considering her party’s in the minority and her…
