Mayoral Madness

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

After yesterday, with both Rick Kriseman and Ken Welch nobly deciding not to run for Mayor of St. Petersburg, political observers we are left with a much clearer “playoff picture.” The race is still in the first round, but the paths to victory for some candidates are now much more defined. As I saw it, only either Deveron Gibbons or Ken Welch could move forward by consolidating the African-American vote. With Welch’s departure, Gibbons wins an entire voting block, if only…

Is Deveron Gibbons polling already?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The sister of a close friend says she received a call this week from Republican polling firm The Tarrance Group asking questions about the St. Petersburg mayor’s race. The woman who answered this poll was struck by how detailed and extensive the interview was; based on the questions she said they asked, I’d estimate the poll cost at least 10K. Most of the questions were framed around Deveron Gibbons, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the poll is being conducted by…

Up-to-the-minute news on Ken Welch

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

As we wait with bated breath for Ken Welch’s decision on his political future, I have just learned from a high-level source that Mr. Welch did, in fact, meet with Representative Kriseman today for lunch. A tidbit: Nancy Watkins is Deveron Gibbons’ treasurer

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I was reviewing some of the paperwork that’s been filed at the City Clerk’s office and one tidbit stands out, not that it’s a big deal or that it should come as surprise, but on Deveron Gibbons’ paperwork he lists Nancy Watkins as his campaign treasurer. To me this is another sign of strength for his campaign because Watkins is the authority in Tampa Bay when it comes to campaign finance matters.
