Pinellas eTownHall tonight

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

David DeCamp reminds us: Pinellas County is taking questions here for its Internet-based eTownHall meeting from 6:30 to 8 tonight on its budget. The county plans to cut $60 million this summer to cure a deficit in 2011 and prepare for more cuts in 2012. Some key points from the county’s news release on the event: County commissioners will answer blogged questions during the eTownHall meeting, which can be viewed via live streaming video on the Pinellas County website or…

Can an African-American win in Tarpon Springs? Can the Stonewall Democrats win another race? And other intriguing questions from Pinellas’ elections

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Tomorrow is Election Day tomorrow in Pinellas. Check back often with Saint Petersblog for updates, photos and results from interesting races in Clearwater, Gulfport, Oldsmar and Tarpon Springs. Here’s are the story lines I’ll be following: Can an African-American candidate win in Tarpon Springs? City Commissioner David Archie is facing off against my friend Matt King to replace Beverly Biliris as the next Mayor of the City of Sponges. Pinellas County does not have a jail. Pinellas County has a debtors’ prison. Before I explain why, let me be clear, Yvonne Maafu is not an angel. She’s got a criminal record. She’s been to jail before. She very well may end up in jail again. But there’s no excuse for what’s happened to her over the last two weeks. On January 10, Maafu was arrested by the Largo Police at her home for retail theft. She was booked into…

Live-blogging, tweeting of Pinellas GOP’s straw ballot showdown between Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Life has its little ironies. For me, one of them is the fact that I get along much better with my old Republican friends than I do with my new Democratic colleagues. I’d much rather have a drink with Tony DiMatteo than Ramsey McLaughlan. Maybe that’s why I’ve enjoyed going to the Pinellas Republican Executive Committee meetings (do the Pinellas Democrats even have meetings?) I’ll be at January’s meeting of the PCREC to blog and tweet about the straw ballot…
