Monday’s Mayoral Wrap-up

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The first fundraising deadline came and went last week and all of the major campaigns (I’ll get to that distinction in a moment) are still holding their collective breaths, waiting to see each others’ numbers. Of course, the local media is ready to write their horserace stories about which pony got out of the gate fastest. And yet, the same media that bemoans the presence of so much money in politics can’t help but write article after article about nothing…

Ramsey McLaughlin puts Wags to bed at Tiger Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

How boring was Pinellas DEC Chair Ramsey McLaughlin’s speech to Tiger Bay this afternoon? Well, first of all, he answered none of the hot-button questions asked of him by his introductory speaker Jerri Evans. Instead he gave a rather academic speech on how to win an election. McLaughlin’s remarks were in stark contrast to previous appearances by PCREC Chair Tony DiMatteo, who seemed to relish speaking in the Tiger’s Den. To the best question of the day, one posed by…

Scott Wagman insults Deveron Gibbons at photo shoot

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The ever-growing field of St. Petersburg mayoral candidates gathered today at The St. Petersburg Times’ offices for a series of interviews and a group photo shot of all those who have filed to run. Everyone except Deveron Gibbons, who had a board meeting at St. Petersburg College. Bill Foster jokingly suggested that the Times superimpose Gibbons into the photo. To which, Scott Wagman, who was already noticeably uncomfortable, offerred that Gibbons was in “someone else’s pocket.” This is yet another…

Scott Wagman on The Pier

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

“We’re going to have to look at a couple alternatives. One of them is to bulldoze the Pier — and you can negotiate your way out of leases. … Bulldoze it, plant some sod, make it a temporary park — temporary park.” — Scott Wagman on What should happen to the Pier?

Deveron Gibbons and Scott Wagman incoherent on what to do with The Pier

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Adam Smith, on a break from covering the legislative session, wrote the Bay Buzz post below. It is petrifying how incoherent both Deveron Gibbons and Scott Wagman are on one of the most important issues facing the city: what to do with The Pier. Unfortunately, these two candidates, Gibbons through his connections in statewide politics and Wagman with his own checkbook, are sure to be the leading fundraisers for the first quarter. Still, take a moment to read their statements…

Avert your eyes! Kathleen Ford’s website is up

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Kathleen Ford’s campaign website is now up and running, almost a month after she filed her paperwork to run for St. Petersburg Mayor. It isn’t the roogoodoo that Bill Foster’s site is, but it’s pretty bad, even by political website standards. How do I hate thee, let me count the ways: The header is generic, with cut-and-paste Americana bunting and a campaign pin that reads “Ford ’09.” The top left of the site is dominated with icons that link to…

Monday’s Mayoral Wrap-Up

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Today is the six-months-and-counting point before the September primary and to mark the occasion, Bill Foster will unveil his “Foster Formula,” although I have a few ideas about what that really means. Even though I think Foster is getting into the race a month later than he should, he is a formidable candidate. He represents a point-of-view, i.e., the religious right, that has no one else to support. Strange then that Foster decided to skip the Pinellas County REC’s Lincoln…
