With new law, voting in Florida’s elections will start week of July 4!

in Statewide by

Tucked into HB 131 (which I track using LobbyTools), the wide-ranging election reform legislation which would, among other things, clarify political advertising on the internet and regulate the electioneering activities of ‘527’s’, is a provision which would move up the date of when each county’s Supervisor of Elections would be required to mail out ballots to “early voters”, such as military and overseas voters.  Currently, the law requires Supervisors of Elections to mail ballots no later than 35 days before…

Terry Krassner raises $15,000 for Pinellas School Board campaign

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The campaign finance reports aren’t in yet, but Pinellas school board candidate Terry Krassner tells supporters in her latest campaign note that she has already raised $15,000 from more than 100 individual contributors. That’s a lot of money in a short amount of time, and a sign of a well-connected, well-oiled machine. Krassner, a retired principal and daughter of former board member Lee Benjamin, is running for the at-large, District 2 seat being vacated by Nina Hayden. At this point, there is one…

Election Day

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

In The County Election, the artist presents a raucous voting party as an enactment of democracy, bringing together a variety of residents in a rural community to make decisions for the common good. Kendrick Meek’s signature-gathering effort is exactly where I projected it to be — further behind than where campaign says

in Peter/Statewide by

Last week, I wrote a post “Is Kendrick Meek’s sisyphean signature-gathering effort further behind than campaign wants to admit?” in which, after a real-time sampling of the ten Supervisor of Elections’ offices which have, to date, processed more than 85% of Meek’s verified signatures, I warned that Kendrick Meek’s effort to qualify for the ballot by petition is dangerously behind where his campaign says it is. In a conference call three weeks ago with a pool of new media writers…

More intrigue out of the aftermath of the Special Election in House District 58

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

At approximately 9:40 p.m., the Supervisor of Elections office in Hillsborough County announced that Janet Cruz had taken 58 more votes than Pat Kemp, and won by 2%, 47-45. Gil Sanchez finished in 3rd place with 8% of the vote. Stunningly, the margin in Hunter Chamberlin’s defeat of Jackie Rojas-Quinones in the GOP primary was just 12 votes, 355 votes to 343, or 1.7% of the vote, but still too big of a margin to trigger an automatic machine recount.…
