Pinellas teachers union endorsements irritate teacher candidates

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The teachers running for Pinellas school board this year are miffed they didn’t win backing from what would seem a natural ally: the teachers union. The union’s political action committee chose incumbent Linda Lerner over middle school teacher Brian Hawley and retired principal Terry Krassner over math/science coach Fonda Huff. The union’s PAC also endorsed incumbent Peggy O’Shea over Greg Hunsinger, who retired as a teacher last year. “Very frustrated” is how Hawley, a teachers union representative at Largo Middle School, described his reaction…

Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio off the Primary Ballot impact numerous down-ballot races

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I imagine a political reporter could just about go mad thinking about all of the ramifications of Charlie Crist’s decision to drop out out of the GOP primary and run for the U.S. Senate with No Party Affiliation. One unintended consequence of Crist’s decision is the impact not having Crist and Rubio driving turnout in the Primary will have on down-ballot races, including partisan races, such as state legislative primaries and county commission races, and on non-partisan races where party affiliation may…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The campaign finance reports aren’t in yet, but Pinellas school board candidate Terry Krassner tells supporters in her latest campaign note that she has already raised $15,000 from more than 100 individual contributors. That’s a lot of money in a short amount of time, and a sign of a well-connected, well-oiled machine. Krassner, a retired principal and daughter of former board member Lee Benjamin, is running for the at-large, District 2 seat being vacated by Nina Hayden. At this point, there is one…

And then there were two: Another candidate drops out of race for Pinellas School Board

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A second candidate has dropped out of the race for the Pinellas School Board at-large District 2 seat. Jessica Summers of Largo notified the Pinellas Supervisor of Elections office last week that she won’t be running after all. The SOE’s Web site now lists her campaign as “inactive.” Linda Dabney Benware was the first candidate to file and then back out. Summers’ departure leaves two in the race: retired principal Terry Krassner and math/science coach Fonda Huff.
