College football’s four-team playoff has altered some of the drama of the regular season. On one hand, some of the biggest games aren’t necessarily must-wins, since one loss may not end a team’s playoff hopes. Clemson lost in November last year and still went on to win the national title. The mother of a Tallahassee elementary schooler is suing the local school board after a teacher slammed a “timeout room” door on her special-needs son’s hand, breaking his finger, according to her complaint. The case is being handled by an attorney for Morgan & Morgan, the statewide personal injury law firm founded by Orlando lawyer and entrepreneur John Morgan.

Save Southern Heritage is going back to court, charging two Hillsborough County Democrats with defamation for calling them a “white supremacist group.” The leading advocacy group for keeping a Confederate monument in front of the Hillsborough County Courthouse annex is reacting to statements from Ione Townsend, chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee. The action also takes issue with comments posted on the activist group Organize Florida website as well as those by Tim Heberlein, the political director of the group.
Joining what is expected to be a bruising Democratic primary, state Representative Janet Cruz has filed to run for for the District 1 seat on the Hillsborough County Commission. Cruz, who is term limited out in 2018, had said months ago that she would be running for the seat, so it’s not much of a surprise that she entered the race. University of Florida says it is not permanently barring a group headed by white nationalist Richard Spencer from speaking at its campus.
Gov. Rick Scott on Friday set the dates for the special elections to replace former state Rep. Alex Miller, the Sarasota Republican whose resignation became effective today. The special primary election for House District 72 will be held on Dec. 5, and a special general election is set for next Feb. 13, Scott’s executive order says.
